Curo Wins Chamber of Commerce ‘Best Employer’ Award

Monday, September 24th, 2012

We’re delighted to have been crowned ‘Best Employer’ at last week’s Chamber of Commerce awards. We had some pretty stiff competition and were over the moon when our name was read out. Accepting the award were partners Anna Madden and Julia Whelan who have worked tirelessly since Curo began to be a place of choice for professionals to work.

The annual Chamber of Commerce Awards were held at the Three Counties Centre in Malvern and celebrates the best of business across Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

The trophy now has pride of place in our offices and we are so grateful to the team at the Chamber for all their hard work in organising the event, which was a wonderful evening.

SMEs to benefit from change in audit exemption limits

Monday, September 10th, 2012

It was announced recently by Vince Cable that the number of companies required to have an audit is to fall, following a reduction in the auditing and reporting requirements.

Following a lengthy consultation process, more businesses are able to decide if they have a statutory audit. It is expected that more than 100,000 businesses will benefit from these changes through reduced accountancy and admin costs, in addition to the time freed up to spend on running the business itself.

It will be mostly subsidiary companies which are exempt from an audit, providing their parent company guarantees their liabilities.

Additionally, the changes to the exemption criteria are expected to benefit approximately 36,000 companies. They now need to meet only 2 out of 3 of the criteria need to be exempt from an audit. (Previously all three conditions had to be met)

These criteria are:

No more than 50 employees
No more than £3.26m on the balance sheet
Less than £6.5m turnover

The changes are expected to come into force for accounting years ending on or after 1 October 2012.

If you would like to discuss your audit and accounting requirements in more detail, Anna Madden, Partner at Curo Chartered Accountants can guide you through the process. Anna can be contacted at [email protected] or on 01527 558539.

Half a million taxpayers set to receive late filing penalties

Monday, August 20th, 2012

Are you one of the half a million UK taxpayers who has recently received a penalty letter from HM Revenue & Customs for not yet filing your 2010/11 tax return?

Each fine is a minimum of £1,200 comprising £900 maximum daily penalties and a further penalty of £300 or 5% of the tax due (whichever is higher).

Anyone who has received a late-filing penalty and believes they should not be in self-assessment can apply to be taken out of the SA system. If HMRC agrees, they will waive the penalty.

If you would like help in getting up to speed with your tax affairs and avoid future penalties, please get in touch with Julia Whelan, tax partner at Curo Chartered Accountants on 01527 558539 or email [email protected] Julia will calmly guide you through the tax system and help ensure your tax affairs are in order going forward.
